Great Summer Safety Tips For You And Your Family

When it comes to summertime fun there are a million things to do and never enough time to get to them all. Unfortunately, there are a lot of small details that, if they aren’t attended to properly, could land you in a dangerous situation so it’s important to take some time to plan out your activities carefully. Let’s look at some great summertime safety tips for the pool, food, and driving.

Hot Weather Means Hitting the Water

There is no better way to cool off than to head to the local pool, beach, river, or lake and take a nice cool dip in the water. Sadly, hundreds of children, and sometimes adults, drown each year, mostly in the summer. People forget that they haven’t swum since the last season and how much energy swimming across the river entails. Halfway across they run out of steam and start to flounder. Then, one or two innocent bystanders usually dive in to try and save them but they too become casualties.

No matter what body of water, how deep it is, or slow it’s flowing, it can be dangerous if you’re not used to swimming longer distances. Diving in to save someone else without a floatation device is just plain dangerous. People that are drowning will usually panic and start climbing their rescuers like a ladder, then they both drown. It’s always best to approach the drowning person with a floatation device and let them cling to it to stabilize themselves. Then get help hauling them to shore. If your kids aren’t good swimmers make sure they’re wearing top quality life preservers every time they enter the water as well.

Driving In The Hot Summer Weather Has Its Challenges

Cars create their own heat and then they use cooling systems to help dissipate that heat. However, when it’s hot out the engine’s cooling system has trouble getting rid of extra heat and the car can overheat. Before you leave home during extremely hot weather, make sure you check the radiator coolant level, oil level, brake fluid, and transmission fluid too. Getting stuck on the side of the road during hot weather can be dangerous to your health, and to your kid’s health even more.

Check your tire pressure as well as the tread wear, and inspect for nails, glass and other embedded sharp items before you leave home. Make sure that your spare tire has plenty of air and that your jack and changing tools are all in good working order. When you see a nice roadside rest area take a half hour or so to stop to cool off and let your car take a break too.

When Going On A Picnic, Take Precautions In The Heat

Some foods are really sensitive to being the right temperature. You should keep hot foods hot and especially, cold foods cold to make sure that they don’t start to spoil in the summer heat. There are insulated coolers that can work both ways and don’t hesitate to bring along plenty of ice. Once you’ve eaten what you want, put the food back in the coolers again.

Getting cooled off in the summer heat is a lot of fun, just take a few extra minutes to make sure that you’ve thought ahead and planned well. Take along extra drinking water, sunscreen, good shoes and always a cell phone to call for help if needed.
