Recognizing Sexual Abuse Among Children – A Tip Sheet

Great caution should always be used when trying to recognize sexual abuse among children. Because while there are signs of something that’s not right, it doesn’t necessarily mean sexual abuse was involved. Due to different personalities and lack of communication, it’s a very difficult matter to approach.

But that doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to be suspicious. As a parent, teacher, friend or family member, it’s your duty to pay attention and safeguard children from this awful experience. So in light of keeping the children safe, here are some signals to look out for.

– Disturbed Sleeping Patterns

You can tell a lot about a child based on their sleeping habits alone. If they suddenly have nightmares or simply can’t fall asleep, there’s something bothering them. Another good indication of deeper issues is checking whether the child wets the bed.

– Distant And Distract

Does the child fall into moments where they seem completely distant and distracted? It could be a sub-conscious reaction to a traumatic experience.

– Drastic Appetite Changes

What goes on in the mind will eventually show in the body. For example, if a child suddenly stops eating, or falls into a habit of binge eating. This is most likely caused by heavy pressure and stress, which can be associated with sexual abuse.

– Outrageous Mood Swings

This is one of the more difficult signs to spot, because teens and hormones don’t mix. It’s very natural for them to go through phases where they act out, but it’s not so common for toddlers and younger kids.

– Social Retreat

A more obvious telltale sign regarding sexual abuse is when the child begins to retreat socially. If they suddenly prefer sitting alone in the corner where they used to be outside on the playground, then let the alarms go off.

– A Change In Behavior

Even though all of the above-mentioned signs point to behavior changes, this one in particular speaks to expressing adult-like habits. More specifically, it speaks to sexual adult expressions, or even drug and alcohol abuse.

Some Things To Consider

Making assumptions is incredibly dangerous, especially when it turns on convicting someone who could be innocent. In fact, several of these signs combined can point to something completely different. But they should at least serve as an alarm of some kind. When you notice these changes in a child you know very well, maybe it’s time to get involved.
