Executive Protection

BDA’s Executive Protection Services – Professional, Experienced and Polished

Security personnel protecting an executive

Sean McCarthy: Thanks for having me, Brian. I’m glad to be here, and I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this important topic.

Brian Buggé: Absolutely. Let’s start with your background—what led you to specialize in executive protection?

Sean McCarthy: My journey began with military service. I enlisted in the Marine Corps, transitioned to the officer side, and retired after more than 22 years. Among my specialties were Infantry, Military Police, and Foreign Security Force Advisor, but I was fortunate enough to work in a wide range of challenging roles, as the post-9/11 years brought about tremendous global challenges in complex locations.  I gained experience in many aspects of security, to include protecting high-risk individuals. After the Marines, I was a private military contractor for U.S. Special Operations Command in Afghanistan, and later for the Army as the Director of Plans, Training, Mobilization & Security for Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. In a way, my whole military career was building toward a private sector security career, and now a particular focus on executive protection. We ensure the safety of CEOs, celebrities, high-net-worth individuals, high-risk individuals, but also really anyone needing armed professional protection.

Brian Buggé: That’s an incredible path. Now that you’re leading the Personal Protection Division at Beau Dietl & Associates, what do you think sets your team apart from others offering similar services?

Sean McCarthy: One of the main things that sets us apart is how we approach each case. Every client and situation is different, and we tailor our approach accordingly. At Beau Dietl & Associates, we take a holistic view of executive protection. It’s not just about providing physical security; we focus on proactive risk assessment, intelligence gathering, and creating secure environments that allow clients to go about their personal lives and their business lives with minimal disruption. We also integrate technology with traditional methods to offer a comprehensive protection plan for each client. We understand the unique challenges faced by our clients in New York City, and that understanding extends globally. Our recent clients have had a wide range of needs—including both overt protection to covert protection, and some with threats ranging from individuals to larger political or activist groups. It’s our ability to adapt and customize our approach that sets us apart.

Brian Buggé: It sounds like no two days are the same for your team. Speaking of which, what do you see as the biggest challenges in executive protection today?

Sean McCarthy: The biggest challenge today is the constantly evolving threat landscape. We’re dealing with everything from protests at a client’s home or office to digital espionage and social media threats that lead to the requirement for protection. Especially in a city like New York, the density of people and the high-profile nature of many of our clients make things even more complex. To keep up with these threats, we have to stay ahead of the curve with continuous training and new technology. And while we do work globally, New York City presents its own unique challenges. You can’t learn this work in a book or classroom—you need the right contacts and a deep knowledge of how to physically navigate the city. It’s a very distinct environment and we have the NYC street knowledge and contacts that set us apart from competitors.

Brian Buggé: Your job must be pretty unpredictable. What does a typical day look like for you as the head of the Personal Protection Division?

Sean McCarthy: It all depends. Some days start with making sure current operations are running smoothly—whether it’s handling a last-minute change in a client’s itinerary or making sure we have enough and the “right-fit” protection agents on hand. I get updates from our agents and address any immediate needs. On top of that, we’re always planning for future assignments. Matching the right protective agent to a client is critical. I also spend a good amount of time mentoring the team and making sure they’re prepared for anything. Staying connected with our network of law enforcement and intelligence sources is key as well. My day usually ends with a debrief to assess how things went and where we can improve.

Brian Buggé: With so much unpredictability, what advice would you give to someone considering executive protection services for themselves or their company?

Sean McCarthy: My main advice is to view executive protection as an investment in both peace of mind and operational continuity. It’s not just about having a bodyguard—it’s about creating a full security strategy. You want a team with a proven track record that can tailor its services to your specific needs. The best security often operates quietly in the background, allowing you to focus on what matters most. And while a lot of our conversation has focused on high-profile individuals, it’s important to note that executive protection isn’t just for celebrities or CEOs. Sometimes, regular people find themselves in situations that require protection and investigative services too.

Brian Buggé: That’s a great point. Looking ahead, what do you see as the future of executive protection?

Sean McCarthy: As the world becomes more interconnected, the lines between physical and digital security are going to blur even more. The key to staying ahead will be continuous innovation, ongoing training, and like everything in life–relationships. Building strong relationships and partnerships with experts in different fields is critical.

Brian Buggé: Thanks Sean. It’s been fascinating to hear your insights. It’s clear the Personal Protection Division at Beau Dietl & Associates is in great hands, and I’m excited to see how your team continues to innovate.

Examples from past cases:

  • Armed protection for a family and staff members, but in addition to that it required a Technical Security & Countermeasures (TSCM) sweep (AKA bug sweep), as well as an investigation spanning numerous states.
  • We’ve had cases where, due to the nature of the threat and the desires of the client, we were often not aware of the clients itinerary / movements until right before we were moving or with very short notice – this requires the ability and maturity to adapt quickly.
  • A recent case involved an extremely fluid situation regarding locations, as well as the unique aspect to where the protector had to also turn into somewhat of a personal assistant.  Those cases require a certain level of maturity and professionalism.
